Sitting here just trying to update and think about where and what Dakar has done and achieved over the last year, and to be honest we seem to have done quite a bit this year.

Business wise I am pleased to say that due mainly to recommendations, our customers are continuing to grow and existing customers still coming back to us.  So on that note, we must be doing something right. Do to our steady growth and to help provide continuity of service, we have employed a new receptionist Beverley back in March of this year and this has proved to be very successful. She is able to meet and greet customers, help Tina provide the most effective estimates but best of all makes a really excellent tea and coffee and helps make our customers at Dakar a more relaxed experience.  We also entered the Dartford & Gravesham Business Awards 2012 and although we didn't win, it is of course the taking part.

This has meant that I have been able to promote Tina to Office Manager from July of this year and that has meant that she has been able to take more interaction with the workshop helping her run the diary and daily workload as well as all the normal bits and pieces of course. Tina loves speaking to customers and is also responsible for all of our MOT reminders and has built up a very good rapport with most of our customers over the last 6 years.

Workshop wise, we have had very little change with regards to staff which has meant that our workshop team work well together and realise that we are all cogs in the big wheel. We have a range of expertise out there so we can cover most jobs that we come across.  Louis is still our Senior Technician and MOT tester who not only keeps things running out in the workshop, overseeing and helping those that need it but also is able to carry out engine work, clutches, gearboxes to name but a few.  Then we have Mark who just loves the welding jobs that we get in particularly on Discovery 1's, many of which are loved by their owners and who do not want to change vehicles, therefore Mark has given a new lease of life to many discovery's now. Martin "Google" is our specialist diagnostic technician and is so happy when he is in the depth of your vehicle with wiring everywhere and finding a chaffed wire which then solves your problem. He is also a whizz on our diagnostic computers and likes nothing more than a challenge.

I am pleased to congratulate Conor on passing his apprenticeship and gaining a Dipolma in Light Motor Vehicles - well done.  Ryan is now in his second year of his apprenticeship so only one more year to go for him - Ray our MOT Tester is still here busying himself with MOT's and Peter who semi-retired comes and joins us when Ray decides to have a holiday.

Unfortunately Andy left earlier this year and Keith has taken over our Joydens Wood branch with much gusto, it has been redecorated and spruced up and Keith is fitting in very well up there.

Social wise this year, Dakar for various reasons has attended many different social events. Barry has been back to his roots by helping out a well known company move race vehicles around, and trailering shower and toilet blocks and cabins to various festivals such as Camp Bestival, V-festival, Bestival to name but a few and to some of our most historic events that have occurred this year such as the Diamond Jubilee and the Olympics.

With the end of the year nearly upon us, Dakar has had some major changes during 2010.

Following on from the announcement that Dakar Cars had been selected as one of the finalists in this years Dartford & Gravesham Business Awards, some of the Dakar staff members attended a star studded night at the Acacia Halls in Dartford on the evening of the 12th June, to name but a few amongst the celebs Cllr Jeremy Kite, Leader of Dartford Borough Council and Cllr Mike Snelling, Leader of Gravesham Borough Council.  A great night was had by all and after pictures and a sumptuous meal the nail biting began with the awards ceremony.

Dakar was very proud to accept the award for Highly Commended and would like to congratulate Livis Ltd for winning the Dartford & Gravesham Business Award 2009.  We would also like to thank all the Judges and everyone involved in organising the Awards.

Dakar Cars are very pleased to say that they are one of the finalists in the Gravesham and Dartford Business Awards 2009.  We will keep everyone updated as soon as we have any further news but everyone is looking forward to the dinner and dance on the 12th June 2009.

Dakar press release:

January 2009

Dakar Cars voted Garage of the Year

Dartford and Bexley-based Dakar Cars has won

the prestigious 2009 Garage of the Year title in

the Car and Accessory Trader (CAT) Magazine Awards.

Dakar managing director, Barry Chantler, and

operations manager, Chris Barnett, were presented

with the Award by rally legend, Paddy Hopkirk at

the annual Autosport International Show.

Dakar Cars was launched in 1991 to design and build the Dakar 4x4 made famous by Anneka Rice in her show, Challenge Anneka. In the last seven years, the business has expanded to two locations and offers MOT and services, diagnostics, tyres and exhausts and a Parts Counter, where customers can buy Land Rover parts.

The five-bay service and MOT workshops can cater for any vehicle but specialises in all types of Land Rovers. The CAT award tops an exciting few years for the firm, which has grown rapidly since adding their MOT bay in 2005.

The expansion is set to continue, with the launch of a trade parts delivery service planned for the coming months.

“We are all delighted to officially be named Garage of the Year,” beamed Barry. “It’s the icing on the cake after a few years in which we’ve really expanded as a business. All the staff have worked hard to achieve this. It’s also confirmation to all of our loyal customers that they really can be confident of getting the very best service when they come to us. I’d like to thank our sponsors at Euro Car Parts, as they’ve helped us a lot.”

The CAT Garage of the Year Award is one of six awards handed out at the market-leading automotive aftermarket magazine’s annual ceremony, held in front of 50 industry bosses.

Congratulating Barry and Chris and their team on their win, CAT editor Emma Butcher said: “It is a real honour to receive a CAT Award because winners are not selected by a judging panel but voted for by the people who do business with them on a day-to-day basis. It is testament to Dakar Cars’ commitment to providing a high-quality, professional and friendly service that their customers, suppliers and peers chose them as their Garage of the Year for 2009.”

Employing 13 members of staff, Dakar Cars is part of the Good Garage Scheme, which means it carries out services to a strict standard and will always have the customers’ best interests at heart. It also allows the company’s 4000 or so customers to give feedback to an independent trade body on its performance, with the comments ultimately published online.

Details of the services provided by Dakar Cars Ltd can be obtained by calling 01322 614044 or emailing sales@dakar.co.uk.
